The Heartbreaking Change Only 12 Months Has Caused in the United States

One year ago, the environment was completely different. Ahead of the American presidential vote, reflective residents could recognize the nation's deep flaws – its injustices and inequality – however they could still identify it as America. A democracy. A country where the rule of law held significance. A state headed by a honorable and ethical official, notwithstanding his older age and growing weakness.

Nowadays, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens hardly identify the land we reside in. Individuals alleged as undocumented migrants are detained and shoved into transport, sometimes denied due process. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for an obscene dance hall. Donald Trump is targeting his opponents or alleged foes and insisting legal authorities surrender a massive sum of citizen dollars. Uniformed troops are dispatched to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, rebranded the War Department, has practically freed itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses what could amount to almost one trillion dollars in public funds. Institutions, legal practices, journalism organizations are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are treated like members of the royal family.

“The United States, just months before its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the edge toward dictatorship and extremism,” a noted author, commented recently. “In the end, faster than I thought feasible, it transpired in America.”

Each day begins with fresh terrors. And it is difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined we are, and how quickly it unfolded.

However, we understand that Trump was legitimately chosen. Even after his deeply disturbing initial presidency and following the alerts associated with the understanding of Project 2025 – even after Trump himself declared plainly he planned to act as an autocrat just on day one – sufficient voters elected him rather than Kamala Harris.

Frightening as today's circumstances is, it's more frightening to understand that we are just three-quarters of a year into this administration. What will another 36 months of this downfall leave us? And suppose that timeframe transforms into something even longer, since there is nobody to stop this ruler from deciding that a third term is required, maybe for security concerns?

Certainly, all is not lost. There will be midterm elections in 2026 which might establish an alternate governmental control, if Democrats regain the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist elected officials who are attempting to exert some accountability, for example Democratic congressmen that are initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote three years from now could begin our journey toward restoration just as the previous vote set us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist millions of Americans protesting in public spaces across municipalities, similar to recent recently at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, wrote recently that “the slumbering force of America is stirring”, similar to past following the Red Scare in the 1950s or amid the sixties activism or in the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the tilting vessel ultimately corrected itself.

Reich says he knows the signs of that revival and notices it unfolding now. As evidence, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, cross-party resistance regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal defiance by media to accept the defense department’s demands they solely cover what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity consistently stays asleep before certain corruption grows too toxic, an specific act so offensive toward public welfare, specific cruelty so noisy, that he is compelled other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Possibly he may turn out correct.

In the meantime, the crucial issues persist: will the nation ever recover? Is it possible to restore its position globally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind indicates that the final scenario is true; that everything might be gone. My hopeful heart, though, convinces me that we must try, by any means available.

For me, working in journalism analysis, that involves urging journalists to commit, more fully, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For others, it could mean working on political races, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to defend ballot privileges.

Not even one year prior, we were in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to strive to not give up.
