Apex Legends' Specialized Movement Mechanics Are Going Mainstream During This Update

Respawn Entertainment have an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's highly fluid movement can rejoice to learn that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when the Amped season goes live on November 4th.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Named "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this feature gives players a surge of propulsion when climbing over obstacles. As explained key developer Eric Canavese, this technique was previously been a feature of the game for some time, often called as "ledge boosting." But it's challenging for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in Ranked Mode or esports competitions. In this update, the team is making it easier for everyone to execute these tricky movement boosts.

"This technique have been in Apex for a while, but the movement isn't easy to pull off and a player might not realize it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer states. "Now including a visual cue so users can easily see when and how to activate the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the feature and adding new ways to compete for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a previously obscure technique accessible to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains developers wants players to experience empowerment — even those who are new.

"Our community performs other crazy stuff like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we looked around at other games, observed what the community are doing, and we wondered, 'What if we extend some of this power to a broader audience?'" Mohan clarifies. "Because right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are kind of janky to access — you need to change controls and hit one-frame windows. We proposed, 'What if we make a more official implementation?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is largely the central theme in Season 27, with characters Horizon, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving enhancements to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will propel players upward much quicker than it used to. Her defensive walls now include overhead protection and the ability to grant speed boosts to allies in range. However it's aerial this Legend who's getting the most attention now, with multiple tweaks applied to make her stronger, faster, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," says Legend designer Ian Holstead. "Certainly that she's been dominant in the past, but due to the addition of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in today's Apex. This presented a really great opportunity for us to reexamine a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of restore her to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore her competitive status in current strategies, the developer says the team evaluated all her skills and introduced significant modifications. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, boosting her speed during flight, and this equipment now recharge three times faster, enabling the player to remain longer in the air. Now she won't be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark enemies who are hit from it. Her squad redeploy ability — which lifts teammates skyward for repositioning or escape — requires reduced delay to fire up. She's also getting some new Legend Upgrades that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," he comments.

Map Changes

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, receives a movement-friendly facelift, with major changes that expands bottlenecks and makes claiming the high ground a bit less daunting. The developers state the game this update focuses on giving players the tools they need to keep up with matches.

"Really, we were looking at Apex's fundamental nature as a fast-paced FPS," explains lead Legend designer the lead.
